Texas Daily PhotoTexas Daily Photo: Galloway Soul Food
This is where I take my out of town guests.
Austin’s soul food scene is not particularly strong so Galloway Sandwich Shop [still mystified as to the official title of the restaurant-they might make a sandwich or two but this is a soul food house] is a savior of sorts for our community.
For the last 14 years Stephen Galloway and his mother Laverne have put out two squares a day for the bustling 12th and Chicon neighborhood.
If you make your way down there bright and early you’ll find a good southern breakfast with house patted sausage, fried eggs, grits, gravy and biscuits. Then around 11am the tiny kitchen starts hustling out the fried chicken, smothered pork chops, catfish, collard greens, broccoli….the menu changes everyday so you’re never exactly sure what kind of feast you’ll have set in front of you.
If you see something on the steam line that’s smothered in brown gravy get it. The Galloways have a fine hand when it comes to this area of their cuisine.
Make sure and save a room for a slab of sweet potato pie as it’s the best in town.
