Texas Daily Photo: Ray’s Barbecue In Montopolis Neighborhood Of Austin

One of my very favorite barbecue houses in Austin.

Montopolis is one of our town’s oldest neighborhoods [it was its own city before Austin even existed] and you can feel the history in the air as you make your way through the dusty back streets. Ray’s Barbecue hit the big time a while back when Friday Night Lights featured the restaurant on a few episodes.

At one point the crowds had gotten so large that the business had to discontinue their popular “Soul Food Thursdays” because the staff simply could not keep up with the demand for their groaning blue plates.

No matter. They’re still putting out some of the best, under the radar barbecue in Travis County.

At its heart Ray’s is a brisket house. Yes, the other meats are fine but when I roll in here I get a pound of the black and fatty and call it a day.

The tumult over the fame and stardom of being featured on a hit tv show has died down now but Ray’s still pulls in some very respectable crowds. A recent lunch visit found the line almost to the door with regulars and staff cutting up as big Sterling [pictured]worked hard to get everybody fed.
