Darren and Sherry Warth of Smokey D’s BBQ out of Iowa emerged victorious at the monster Kingsford Invitational barbecue competition in New York City this past weekend.
The couple walked away with fifty thousand dollars for their efforts.
The competition featured 8 of the top competitive barbecue teams in the USA in a winner takes all battle for that satchel filled with cash.
To even be allowed to compete you had to have won one of the following major barbecue competitions: Houston World Championship Barbecue Contest, Memphis In May, Great Lenexa BBQ Battle, Barbecue Pitmasters, American Royal World Series of Barbecue or Jack Daniels World Championship.
Additionally, the Kansas City Barbecue Society’s team of the year as well as a military team (Queology) representing a foundation called Folds of Honor competed.
Prior to the slow cooking part of the event, the pitbosses tackled steaks in the “One Bite Challenge” Tuffy Stone of Cool Smoke, who just won The Jack for the first time, took home the victory with a ribeye steak drizzled with balsamic syrup.
Contestants were judged on the aggregate system with the competing proteins being chicken, pork, ribs and brisket.
Of course the brisket winners, Smokey D’s, went on to win the grand championship.
