Over the course of the last 2 months the New Orleans Public Library has opened 5 new branches but this one promises to be the grand daddy of ’em all. When they fling their doors open the new location will house a minimum of nine thousand culinary books from across the globe.
Noted southern writer Mildred Covert recently donated her papers to the Southern Food and Beverage Museum and this gesture should provide a nice kickstart to what promises to be one of the grand libraries of the South.
The library will be located in close proximity to Cafe Reconcile, the non-profit restaurant that provides job training to at-risk youth.
Charles Brown, the library’s director, mentioned that the collection will also contain a vast repository of children-centric volumes.
New Orleans is the finest city on earth for eating and this new resource will be met with land-office business. I can barely wait to spend a hot afternoon there with my nose in an ancient cookbook while thunderheads boom over the greatest of all American cities.
