Isn’t Tumblr Mainly Just Porn?

I was talking to a group of strangers a few nights ago and the subject of Instagram came up. Since Facebook is the parent of Instagram I have no truck with the online photo service. If Facebook is involved with anything I stumble upon I walk slowly backward until the offending party is out of sight.

Facebook is the Woolworth of the new century.

Tumblr is an entirely different beast.

Isn’t Tumblr Mainly Just Porn

“Isn’t Tumblr mainly just porn?” That was one of the queries I fielded from the group, all of whom were on Facebook and Instagram but had never tarried with Yahoo’s Tumblr.

Yes, there is plentiful pornography on Tumblr if you’re into that sort of thing, but I use it for a variety of purposes, the least of which being its grunt and groan subset.

I’ll take a look at my dashboard (the backend of the service) and tell y’all what I get from this platform.

Vintage Black Glamour as one might imagine is devoted to high rolling Black musicians and actresses of days of yore. It’s splendid and required viewing for anyone who has a love for the fashion of yesteryear.

Penguin Books is a legendary imprint that has featured words from Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, Benjamin Franklin, John Steinbeck and Ken Kesey among others. Their Tumblr takes a creative look at the classics and wiggles some cool contemporary stuff in as well.

The Chiseler is dedicated to “Forgotten Authors, Neglected Stars, and Lost Languages Rediscovered.” It is brilliant.

I Love Budapest for a lot of reasons, primarily the food and architecture. This Tumblr is devoted to one of my favorite cities on earth.

Do you like cartography? Amazing Maps is one of the best sites breathing life into this hoary old subject.

Of course Tumblr has plenty porn of which Bacchanales Sexuelles is one of the finest. It’s primarily vintage; the Golden Era is well represented here.

Denny Culbert is one of the best food photographers in The South. His Tumblr is of particular interest to folks interested in Acadiana.

The Bourbon Truth is the best blog devoted to bourbon drinking on the web. The author is an industry insider who ruthlessly skewers the pretenders and fetes the men who make the best whiskey on the planet.

If you like old, soul-rattling blues music filled with field hollers and plaintive wails then Muck’s Blues is the finest site on the planet.

Stacy Kranitz is my favorite photographer working in the fields and hollers of Appalachia. Her work is unflinching, ribald and outre’.

I’ll get around to publishing a part two of this list in another year or two. But for the time being, the above bloggers are doing enough good work to warrant your joining Tumblr. It’s more entertaining than the entirety of Instagram and Facebook combined.
